How do I check the pressure on the tire?

Just like the importance of keeping your car’s tire pressure maintained and at the proper tire pressure, it is necessary to do the same with your bicycle.  Operating the bike with low tire pressure can result in the following negative traits:

For road bikes, it is recommended to keep the pressure at or near the tire manufacturer’s maximum pressure, usually between 100-125 psi. It is extremely important to top off your road bike’s pressure every time you ride the bike. A road bike tire can loose upto 5 psi overnight!

For mountain bikes, run the pressure at it’s maximum for street use.  For off-road riding, (mountain biking), the correct tire pressure is critical.  You want to find the balance between having good off road traction (lower pressures allow the tire to conform to the terrain for better grip), and good rolling resistance as well as  preventing pinch flats (higher pressure allows the tire to roll easier and compress less).

Generally, for off road riding, high volume knobby tires (2.1” wide and up) should take about 30-35 psi. in the front, and 35-40psi in the rear.  Aggressive riding and heavier riders need to be careful, and add pressure accordingly.

A good floor pump with an accurate guage for home use is essential in maintaining your bike  tire's pressure. Leave the “mini” pumps for emergency use on the bike ride.  Elsewhere in the Tech Tips section, look for what you should carry with you to address flats and prepare for mechanical issues
